How to Join the Indian Air Force After 12th Science (Through NDA)

Joining the Indian Air Force (IAF) right after completing your 12th with Science stream is one of the most prestigious ways to begin a career of honor, courage, and leadership. The pathway to this goal is through the National Defence Academy (NDA) a joint services training academy for the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force.

Below is the complete guide to eligibility, selection procedure, and training journey for aspirants who wish to serve the nation as Flying Officers in the Indian Air Force.

 Educational Qualification

To apply for the Indian Air Force (IAF) through NDA, candidates must fulfill the following academic criteria:

  • Must have passed 10+2 (Class 12) with Physics and Mathematics as compulsory subjects from a recognized board.

  • Students appearing in Class 12 are also eligible to apply, provided:

    • They meet the age criteria, and

    • Their schooling is completed before the NDA course begins.

 

Note: Candidates who do not have Physics and Mathematics in 10+2 are not eligible for the Air Force Wing of NDA.

 

 Age Limit

  • Candidates must be between 16½ to 19 years of age at the commencement of the course at NDA.

  • The exact date of birth range is specified in the official Site of  UPSC- section  NDA notification for each session.

 Gender Eligibility

  • This is a male-only entry after 12th Science.

  • Female candidates can join the Indian Air Force after graduation through the AFCAT (Air Force Common Admission Test).

Physical Standards (Basic Requirements)

All candidates must meet certain physical fitness and health standards as prescribed by the Indian Air Force.
The key requirements include:

  • Proper height and weight ratio as per IAF norms.

  • Good physical and mental health without any chronic disease or disability.

  • Normal hearing ability in both ears.

  • Well-developed chest with a minimum expansion of 5 cm after full inspiration.

  • Healthy bones and joints, free from any deformities.

 

Tip: Regular physical fitness training and balanced nutrition are essential to meet IAF standards.

 

 Additional Medical Standards (For Flying Branch)

For candidates applying to the Flying Branch, additional medical standards are applicable. These include:

  • Anthropometric measurements (height, sitting height, leg length, thigh length).

  • Spinal health - no history of spine disorders or surgery.

  • Eyesight:

    • Distant Vision: 6/6 in one eye and 6/9 in the other (correctable to 6/6).

    • No color blindness or night blindness.

  • Ocular muscle balance - to ensure strong eye coordination.

 How and When to Apply

The NDA Examination is conducted twice every year by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC)  usually in the months of April and September.

Process of Joining the Indian Air Force After 12th Science

Here’s the complete step by step process for joining the Indian Air Force through NDA:

Step 1: NDA Written Examination

  • Conducted by UPSC.

  • Tests include Mathematics and General Ability (English, Physics, Chemistry, History, Current Affairs, etc.).

Step 2: SSB Interview (Services Selection Board)

  • Shortlisted candidates are called for a 5 day interview that assesses personality, leadership qualities, communication skills, and psychological aptitude.

Step 3: PABT (Pilot Aptitude Battery Test) / CPSS

  • This is a once in a lifetime test for candidates opting for the Flying Branch.

  • It assesses the candidate’s ability and potential to become a pilot.

Step 4: Medical Examination

  • Conducted by Specialized Air Force Medical Boards.

  • A detailed physical and medical assessment is carried out to ensure complete fitness.

Step 5: Final Merit List

  • A final merit list is prepared based on the marks obtained in the written test, SSB interview, and medical examination.

Step 6: Training

  • Selected candidates undergo:

    • 3 years of joint training at National Defence Academy (NDA), Pune, along with Army and Navy cadets.

    • Followed by 1 year of specialized Air Force training at Air Force Academy (AFA), Hyderabad.

 Final Commissioning

Upon successful completion of all training stages, cadets are commissioned as Flying Officers in the Indian Air Force and begin their service to the nation with pride and honor.
